SPORTSBET BARRA BONANZA FISHING RESULTS

One hundred and sixty competitors entered the inaugural $20,000 Sportsbet Barra Bonanza held over the Douglas Shire Virgin Blue Carnivale between the 22nd - 25th May. The competition concluded on the Friday evening at the Combined Clubs with several hundred people attending the presentations, including sponsor representatives, DPI officials and Jason Hagen of ABC Radio Fishtalk program who was the master of ceremonies.

Overall the competition was deemed a success and will be held again next year with Sportsbet agreeing to be the major sponsors. They have committed to possibly a further $70,000, which will definitely continue the interest in this competition. Work has already begun to secure more sponsors and bigger prizes.

Ultimately the prized tagged barramundi were not caught during the competition, however Sportsbet have offered a $500 betting account for any recreational angler able to catch any four of the tagged barramundi until the end of June. The tag numbers are: P74317, P74318, P74319 and P74320. Two barra were released in the Dickson Inlet, near the deep hole just past the island. The third barra was released in the Mossman River approximately 2 kilometres upstream from the river mouth and the fourth was released in the Daintree River 50m downstream from the ferry. Where they are now is anybody’s guess!

The catch and release section of the competition was hotly contested with only a few categories not producing a result. This was mainly confined to the offshore section as the weather conditions were not conducive to reaching the reef, except for one or two days. In general the catch and release concept was warmly welcomed and will remain part of the fixture next year. The organising committee believes any competition which has the potential to draw big numbers should revolve around the catch and release concept. Also next year it has been agreed at this early stage that the competition will be extended to nine days covering two weekend periods so it allows more anglers more time to compete. Hopefully one, if not the two weekends will produce calm conditions for families or groups to head offshore.

It has not been confirmed but the committee is also throwing around ideas that the tagged fish for next year’s event could be mangrove jack or possibly a combination of species including barramundi. Next year’s event promises to be bigger and better!
Until Carnivale 2007 thanks to all those that competed with good spirit and a special thanks to all the wonderful prize donators.
