It is all too familiar - strong winds and driving rain. I bet you'll find a pattern with this year's reports, that they basically condemn the weather. In saying this though, charters are persisting in the trying conditions and are slaying them out on the reef. Impressive hauls of large mouth and small mouth nannygai have been common, mixed in with coral trout, spangled emperor and a few Spanish mackerel. The reef fishing has been awesome this year, however it appears you'll be battling the elements for some time to come. There may be a small opening of calmer weather over the weekend, but this is soon to be followed by another high pressure system which will see the winds return.
Game fishing operators haven't had any opportunity to hit the Shelf in recent weeks and have found themselves hovering in the protection of the paddocks. There is plenty of bait around but it is not being accompanied by much surface action. The best result has been a small black marlin caught behind Tongue Reef on Reel Screamer, however catches have been mostly rubbish including sharky mackerel, barracuda and trevally species. The local fleet are very keen to get out wide and see what may be on offer in Jurassic Park (Opal Ridge and Linden Bank).
In the rivers and creeks the action has been slower mainly due to a poor water temperature around 21 degrees C. The tides have been good of late but they need to be accompanied by a bit more sunshine to simmer the pot. Bream have been definitely firing and there have been smatters of queenfish, jacks and grunter. The barra had a rare moment the other night leading into the full moon where they gathered in the harbour and went ballistic on the bait schools. The deal here was you had to be awake and wetting a line around 1am to cash in.
