Report 5/2/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Feb 05, 2015 1:17 pm

In the river, the usual juvenile kingfish have been taking lures fished around the mouth, and with them has been the occasional amberjack.
Flathead have been a good staple target in areas such as the Terranora and Cobakki lakes, and the usual spread of soft plastics and hardbodies has been doing the damage.
Schools of bream whiting have been present over the flats during the run-in tide, and these can be caught on both lures and bait.
All through the river, the muddies have been active, particularly in the middle to lower reaches, so remember to bring a pot or two.
Mangrove jack have been testing anglers’ knots around the bridges and other structure, and while lures have accounted for some fish, live bait has been the go to method.
Bass are quite active in the upper reaches, both above and below the weir.

There hasn’t been much beach action, but some school jew and decent mangrove jacks have been taken along the mouth walls when weather conditions have been permitting.

Outside, Spaniards and spotties have been patchy, but they’re out there, persistent anglers will get results.
Bonito have been found in good number around Kingscliffe and Point reef, and a fruitless day on the mackerel can be alleviated with some hard-fighting bonito.
Bottom bashing the 9-mile has resulted in some hefty kingfish and cobia, as well as some great spangled emperor.
