Weekly Report 25/05/07

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the flatties are holding on in the lower river with a few decent big females and some school fish but they are gradually being replaced by bream as more are turning up. Little school jew persisting in the river from Wardell and above. Sand crabs and mud crabs in the lower reaches keep on keeping on. Remember, traps are illegal from the Burns Point ferry downstream. The pros netted 40 tonnes of mullet near Missingham Bridge at Ballina this week but there haven’t been any reports of good jewies yet.
Probably the main talking point, however, are the tailor which are still going well around the headlands, walls and along South Ballina Beach. Bream numbers are improving in the same places and there are still some whiting at Patchs Beach.
Outside, there have been snapper and pearlies on the wider grounds and the odd mackerel at Riordans Reef.
Still good spotties at Evans Head with some nice fish to around 8kg and the whisper of some bigger ones. Beware the longtail tuna taking the same small slimies – they’ll spool you in seconds if you don’t get the boat moving after them. Also a few decent snapper and the odd cobia. Bar is good and seas flat.
A few bream up the beach with tailor around Broadwater and whiting down towards Main Beach.
Some bream, still a few whiting and some flathead in the river.
