Weekly Report 10/8/07

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says there have been quite a few good bream along the Town Reach, especially early of an evening. Bag limits have been attainable, especially on baits of chicken gut and mullet gut after dark. Blackfish are holding up really well with bag limits of good fish in all the usual haunts, such as the Porpoise Wall, Prospect bridge and the northern ferry approach. A few whiting are stirring in North Creek and the main river and a lot of flathead have been caught up to Swan Bay, above Woodburn.
Tailor are biting well along the local headlands, South Wall and South Beach. Most have been good fish to 2kg with the best this week around 4kg. Also quite a few bream in the surf.
Plenty of leatherjackets on all the wider reefs but closer to shore there have been good snapper caught.
Similar reports from Evans Head, although the blackfish haven’t been quite as hot, thanks to the very clear water. The odd good catch from the walls and a few in the Bream Hole and around the bridge. Some salmon in with the tailor and bream along the beaches and a few around the headlands as well. Find the bait schools and you should have a good run if you can keep away from the diving gannets.
Similar story with the jackets offshore, they’re plentiful and pesky, but the odd decent red cruising around the closer reefs. Your best shot at them is at sundown and sunrise.
