Weekly Report 28/3/08

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the river has been fishing really well for whiting and flathead with quite a few bream around as well. A few blackfish also starting to appear around the walls. Some school jew up-river around Pimlico to Wardell. Mud crabs are starting to move upstream again but still a few around ththe creeks and the main river.
Beach fishing has been very good with a big run of dart to almost a kilo, a good run of tailor around 2kg mainly in the evenings with garfish the pick of the bait for them. Whiting and flathead also along the beaches in reasonable numbers.
Spotted mackerel and a few Spanish showing at Lennox Head, Black Head and Riordans. Out wider for some good snapper and pearlies
At Evans Head the beach formations have been the best for many moons with great holes, spits and gutters all the way to Boundary Creek and beyond. Good numbers of excellent whiting, large bream and some hefty flathead being taken by most fishos, although there are a few stingrays and shovel-nose sharks to contend with. Can you believe that there are still some idiots who persist in killing these ‘vermin’ fish and leaving their carcases to rot on the beach?
The Evans River has been performing well above its weight, even over the Easter break, with some very large whiting, the odd good bream and flathead to about 80cm coming in, mainly a kilometre or so either side of the Iron Gates.
Some quite good catches offshore, especially pearl perch to around 3kg in fairly close, along with the odd nice hit on the mackerel. Still a bit tough to get livies some days, especially if you’re chasing the small slimy mackerel that the spotties seem to prefer. The odd nice cobia around the South Reef and Black Rock.
