Weekly Report 22/5/08

Post by Tony Zann » Thu May 22, 2008 5:25 pm

Dave’s Bait Shop reports there were some good hits on spotties last weekend around Riordans Reef and a few up off Lennox Head. Some snapper on the deeper reefs with a few squire in close.
Tailor from the headlands and breakwalls have been going pretty well.
Jewfish have slowed down since the full moon but everyone is hoping the big ones come back on the new moon like they did last month, when there were some great catches from the walls and around the RSL Club. Bream are going OK in the river with lures working in the day and bait at night . No flatties or blackfish to speak of.
A quite cool southerly gusting to 30 knots at times on Thursday arvo at Evans Head but it’s expected to abate for the weekend – great news for those keen to get back into the spotted mackerel, which have at last been in good numbers on the Middle Ground between Kahors and the South Reef. Live slimy mackerel suspended a couple of metres below the surface are doing the damage although a trolled nose-rigged slimy with a tail stinger has also worked. Also some reasonable snapper leading up to the full moon and typically, they went off the bite after that.
A plague of tiny chopper tailor and a few mackerel tuna from the rocks, along with some respectable bream and the odd school jew.
Before the weather broke the beaches had some nice bream and flathead in the gutters and holes but the swell might wreck that for a while.
The river has some bream and abundant undersized flathead and when the sea is up, the odd blackfish is poking around the walls.
