Kim at Dave’s Bait Shop says the flathead are going OK in the lower reaches, with the deep water of the Town Reach and the shallows in North Creek and along the Porpoise Wall turning up some nice fish to 80cm along with a run of school fish above legal. Both shallow and deep. Bream are still around in numbers with some quality fish on prawns and bladed lures but there are plenty of throwbacks. Good jew in the river are averaging 15-20kg and biting mostly at night. Up-river the water is clearing up a little with flathead, school jew and bream up as far as Wardell and beyond.
Leatherjackets are prolific outside. Some nice snapper were taken last weekend on the 32-fathom reefs along with some pearlies.
Salmon are around South Ballina and also moving into the lower river at times.
Lennox Beach has some good flatties in the Boat Channel along with some quality bream but you need to keep clear of the marine park sanctuary at the Moat, so don’t edge too far south.
Afternoon onshore winds at Evans Head for the second day in a row, with some nice bream on the beaches along with the odd salmon and whiting. Salmon and flathead along the walls and some bream and increasing numbers of whiting in the river. Flatties and school jew (mostly undersize) further up the river.
Offshore catches have been pretty tame leading up to the new moon with a few squire, trag, the occasional hit of school jew and the odd lovely maori cod.
