Weekly Report 24/12/10

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says that a fair bit of fresh water has started coming down the river – again – but on the run-in tide quite a few whiting and flathead are about in the lower river. A few nice bream around the washes and the walls and some school jew whenever the seas are up. Mud crabs in Emigrant and North Creek.
There were some mackerel at Lennox before the weather when pear shaped and some snapper, pearlies and kings out wide.
Beaches have produced whiting and a few dart and flatties, with a show of decent tailor at night and a handful of choppers during the day.
At Evans Head the beach gutters have been thick with shovelnose sharks and some of the thicker fishos around the place have left the carcases on North Wall and elsewhere. Dickheads. Some whiting, mainly on fresh worms, although the dart are moving in and making pests of themselves. The odd school jew at night on the beaches and around the headlands. The only tailor I’ve heard of were caught in about 25m about 2 miles offshore!
Offshore was quite good before the ocean turned foul, with snapper, trag and a few cobia in close and pearlies, kings and amberjack out wide. Offshore forecast is abysmal.
The river has whiting, bream, the occasional mangrove jack and spiky flathead.
