Weekly Report 23/3/12

A couple of jewfish and some nice bream have been lurking around the breakwalls at Ballina, according to Brett from Ballina Bait and Tackle. A micro-fresh has come down the Richmond, further colouring the water at Ballina, so the rising tide should provide the best opportunity to pick up bream hard against the rock walls. Use smelly bait like mullet flesh and gut or even chicken gut or cast hardbody lures right into the rocks. Whiting have been feeding around Missingham Bridge, in lower North Creek and the main river up to the swimming pool, again on the run-up tide. Try worms or yabbies for them. Crabs are still available in North Creek but Brett says they’re moving around more at night so are more easily snared then.
There’s not been much attention paid to the beaches because of the swell but the sheltered southern corners should provide a few bream and some tailor on the high tide. The chances of heading offshore look pretty slim, which is a pity, since spotted, and Spanish mackerel and a few quality snapper have been following the bait schools around the inshore reefs.
The river at Evans Head is fishing a bit better for some decent whiting, flathead and a few big bream. Around the headlands for some school jew, though most are undersized, along with bream and some mostly chopper tailor. Also more of the same up the beach when the swell drops enough to make it fishable.
Mick McGillivray took the charter boat to sea yesterday but few other boats have been out this week at all and the swell and wind are supposed to be up for the weekend – what’s new?
