Weekly Report 18/5/12

Post by Tony Zann » Fri May 18, 2012 1:10 pm

School jew have been major movers on the breakwalls this week, with live mullet and mullet fillets taking the great majority of fish, according to Squidgy at Ballina Bait and Tackle. Lures haven’t been working too well, he says, although the 110mm Squidgy Fish in drop bear colour has been OK. Tailor are a problem, though, with greedy choppers snipping the soft plastics into a mess before the jew can get to them. There are also a few big tailor about, with one of 4.5kg landed off the South Wall earlier in the week. Flat Rock has also been fishing well for tailor, with blackfish and big bream at low tide when the swell is down, although hungry sharks apparently have been a problem there.
Along with those bream, there also are flathead in the river although they’re mostly just above the legal 36cm. Don’t go much above Pimlico Island or you’ll be in muddy water full of fork-tailed catfish, although the bigger high tides over the next few nights could help tidy things up.
Mackerel are still on the cards over the close reefs but their days could be numbered – keep a close eye on the water temperature over the next few weeks.
A heap of boats out at Evans today (Fri) , with the new ramp carpark full by 8am but not a great number around the cleaning tables when they came back in. Spanish to 16kg have been caught this week along with a few snapper.
Up the beach was OK for tailor and bream earlier in the week but today the swell was a bit too big and breaming a bit far out, so mostly flathead and bream in the close holes. Some school jew around the headland along with chopper tailor.
The river has some bream but they are biting best at night.
