Weekly Report 27/7/12

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle reports improving weather and water quality and the Weather Bureau is even forecasting a sunny weekend! Plenty of bream in the river but you have to scratch about to find many larger ones, which appear to be a bit further upstream than you might think. White pillies and prawns are the leading baits now that the water is clearing and soft plastics and blades are the best lures at the moment. Still plenty of blackfish in the river and green weed is becoming more available. If you can lay your hands on some black weed, bring it with you. School flathead are in patches; if you find one you should get a few.
Bass and perch are being encountered in Emigrant and North creeks and up the main river.
There are salmon and tailor on the beaches and some school jewfish from the breakwalls. The Ballina bar might settle down for the weekend but be very careful there, especially on a falling tide.
The Evans bar has been a bit more friendly and there have been a few boats bringing in snapper, trag and a few jew.
The beaches have lost a lot of sand after a week of rough seas but there are big gutters at low tide and a few nice holes up towards Broadwater. Bream and salmon have been the main catches. A few blackfish around the walls and into the river, which also has bream, whiting and flatties.
