Weekly Report 17/8/12

Squidgy at Ballina Bait and Tackle said there are plenty of bream in the Richmond River but a lot don’t make the 25cm legal length. Whiting and tarwhine have been taken in the river at Ballina and there was even word of a mangrove jack capture. Flathead are going OK from the Wardell bridge downstream, with reasonable numbers around Pimlico. The great blackfish season goes on with big catches at the northern ferry approach, the Porpoise Wall, the Big and Little gaps and the Prospect Bridge. Remember too that bass and estuary perch are still in closed season and it is illegal to possess them.
The beaches have been so-so, mainly because the serious erosion has prevented vehicle access other than at low tide but there have been bream, salmon and some school jewfish from South Ballina to Broadwater.
Still some bad erosion on the beach at Evans Head so it would be wise to go only around low tide. There’s a section just north of the Airforce Beach 4WD access where the waves lap the eroded dune cliffs from about half tide up. Some bream and the add school jew and salmon around.
Trag, snapper and jew off Evans.
