Weekly Report 19/10/12

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says school jew are turning up in a few places, including Emigrant Creek, Burns Point, Pimlico, Wardell and Broadwater. Bigger flathead are mainly between the ferry and Wardell but they’re starting to make their way downstream for spawning. Live herring seem to be doing the damage on them. The odd whiting well up river.
There hasn’t been a lot offshore over the new moon with the closer reefs fairly slow and a few squire out on the 32-fathom reefs. The current is starting to work out wider with water up to 22° and some decent kings on knife jigs. Ballina bar looks like it’s up to its old tricks, with a visiting Yamba trawler on Sunday copping a wave that went clean through the wheelhouse, making an awful mess of things.
Pretty quiet week at Evans Head with a few bream and whiting up the beach and the odd school jew around the rocks.
The close reefs have a few trag but snapper have been pretty quiet.
The river is clear and the best results have come from flathead and bream from the golf course to the Black Hole.
