Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says when you can get out there, there are kingies in 90 fathoms and it’s blue and full of flying fish. There are some snapper on the 32-fathom reefs but mahi mahi seem to be absent from the FAD.
The beaches have a few flathead and bream with one or two small school jewfish.
Towards the mouths the estuaries there are some bigger female flathead showing with fish to 70cm on white pilchards and live herring. The smaller school flatties, from a legal 36cm to around 45cm, are turning up from about the RSL Club through to Pimlico. These are the ones to target for a feed. Odd patches of school jew seem to be coming and going at their major haunts from Burns Point all the way to Woodburn.
Whiting are beginning to smack surface lures as the river water warms, with North Creek the best in the Richmond at this stage.
Blowing 20 knots + at Evans on Friday afternoon with a making swell.
Things have been pretty slow up the beach apart from the odd flathead and a stray bream.
The river has whiting and flathead in reasonable numbers and there are good bream in the snags between the Black Hole and the golf course.
