Weekly Report 21/12/12

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says the offshore grounds were going well until the cyclone swell came in on Friday morning. Marlin, kingfish and wahoo out wide, baby blacks in close and some reds and the odd pearl perch when the current allows.
The beaches have some bream, flathead and patches of whiting and dart.
Most of the river activity is upstream from about Pimlico although there are some bream and blackfish around Ballina and crabs in the creeks.
Hairy moments for the trawlers getting through the Evans River bar this morning and the swell was pretty lumpy and powerful all morning. Brisk southerly nudging 20 knots at times.
Plenty of beach holes and gutters but an awful lot of shovelnose sharks. Let ’em go if you don’t want to eat them and go find another hole and pray they’re not in that one, too! There were some school jew and bream around the headland before the swell.
The river has whiting, flathead and bream with crabs up around the golf course.
