Weekly Report 8/2/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 08, 2013 12:28 pm

A few flatties, bream and whiting have been turning up in the lower river on the high tide, according to Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle. He says school mulloway have been taken on the South Wall but not in great numbers, with soft plastics working best. Bull sharks are in reasonable numbers but that’s no excuse to make a hero out of yourself by catching and killing one, unless you intend to eat it or release it back into its world alive.
Mud crabs are available in lower Emigrant Creek and in North Creek.
Some chopper tailor have been around Flat Rock, Boulder Beach and Lennox Head, along with a few bream. There could be some success on the beaches this weekend, with the high tides reasonable for school jew if the swell allows.
Beach drivers might still have a bit of strife around high tide, too – there isn’t a great deal of sand and it’s easy to get trapped.
I’ve been away from Evans all week but the beach looked pretty good this morning although the surf on the high tide was coming right up to the dunes. A few jewie chasers were up there but they didn’t look too pleased with themselves. Plenty of baitfish in the water around the bar on the rising tide, with slimy mackerel ripping into the whitebait. About a dozen boats out and the bar OK on the top of the tide but worth being wary when it runs out.
River is clear enough to see the bottom in about 4’ at least up to the bridge.
