24/3/06 Weekly Report

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says despite the wind and rain the river has been improving quite strongly with whiting almost up to Pimlico on the high tide, some decent bream along the Porpoise wall and flathead along the entire Town Reach and in North Creek. The walls have been good for the jewie brigade, as you’d expect with 30-knot winds, rising seas and driving rain. South Wall has turned up some nice jew over 15kg with big Squidgies in the drop bear colour the lure of choice. Lucky there are a few fish in the lower river because it’s been too rough to try the beaches or offshore.
It’s the same at Evans Head, with dangerous swells from Cyclone Wati expected to reach the coast over the weekend and make even the walls nasty places to be. There have been occasional good bags of blackfish from the Evans walls but it’s dangerous to even collect the cabbage weed around the rocks in a big swell. Fortunately there have been some decent bream in the Evans River, so there’s something worth fishing for – except for the wind, which would blow the numbers off your boat!
