Weekly Report 9/8/13

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says luderick are going along quite well in all the usual spots now. Try the breakwalls and the Porpoise Wall, the northern approach to the Burns Point ferry, the Prospect Bridge approach and down behind the Ramada. Apparently the pros even netted a few at Wardell this week. ‘Cabbage’ – sea lettuce gathered from the ocean rocks – is attracting the larger fish, especially closer to the river mouth, while green weed and ‘black magic’ weed are producing plenty of dunking floats a little farther upstream.
Bass and EPs are still going well in the creeks but remember, it’s still closed season and it is illegal to possess these fish, dead or alive, until September 1.
Brett says the close reefs have been reasonably productive for snapper and some school jew so if the bar looks OK for the weekend, it could be worth an outing. The dreaded leatherjackets have been fairly quiet out on the 32-fathom reefs and there have been some amberjacks and rat kings on the 42s.
I’ve been away from Evans all week and now (Fri pm) there’s a 16-knot southerly blowing. Last weekend there were some flatties, bream and the odd soapy jew in the Evans River and a few luderick along the breakwalls. There should be more now the seas are rough.
Too bumpy on the beach although ther were some good bream earlier in the week. Bar OK but swell and wind awful offshore but they are tipped to drop for the weekend.
