Weekly Report 23/8/13

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Aug 23, 2013 3:33 pm

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says there have been rat kings out on the 42s and 48s with pearlies and bonito as well. Water is quite warm already. Snapper to 7kg on the 32s and 42s. Jackets out on the 48s. Closer reefs quiet, apart from the odd trag and small snapper.
The beaches have bream and flathead with the odd quality whiting. Just the odd tailor around. Rocks north from the river for some school jew to 9kg, mainly on plastics.
Blackfish at all the usual river spots but they’re tapering off a little. Water is getting very clear on the top of the tide. Flathead and bream moving upstream, with the ferry to Broadwater going better, also for school jew. Flatties in North Creek from Prospect to the airport.
Gusty pre-frontal winds at Evans Head on Friday but some big snapper to almost 1m landed this morning before the wind really came away.
Beaches and headlands for bream but plenty are small. Some tailor around but they’re just on the legal 30cm and the ocean and lower river are extremely clear, so best results are at first and last light or in the dark.
The river is also super clear but a few flathead and bream in the lower reaches and some more up where it’s not so clear.
