Weekly Report 11/04/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Apr 11, 2014 9:16 pm

Saturday will be worth checking out if you are thinking about having a fish around Ballina, but Sunday may see some rain move in and the wind will pick up too.

The close reefs are still producing some Spanish mackerel and the odd tuna. This has meant that a few of the rock hoppers have also had the chance to tangle with a few tuna from spots such as Flat Rock and the iron peg. Metal spinners or surface poppers have been the main lures of choice to chase them with. Saturday may be the last day that we can get offshore until next weekend with some big seas and strong southerly winds predicted for next week.

A few Jew and tailor are coming from the rocks and break walls, with the usual times such as early morning and late afternoon being the most productive. A few dart, whiting, flathead and tailor have been coming from the beaches. Pipies, worms, mullet and pilchards have all been good bait choices depending on your target species.

The river is trying to clean up but some smaller tides have not been helping a lot. Not a lot has changed so stick to the lower reaches of the river around the walls and deep holes for some bream, flathead and the odd school Jew. There are still some reasonable numbers of mudcrabs around in North Creek and the main river. Don't forget your fishing licenses as Fisheries officers will be out and about over the school holidays. Good luck and tight lines!
