Report 11/07/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:51 pm

This weekend is shaping up to be a bit of a mixed bag. The weather is looking like it will be fairly nice on Saturday but the wind will start blowing and there is a strong chance of a few showers on Sunday. Weather permitting the close reefs will be worth checking out as a few more snapper are moving in close. Some good quality Jew have been taking live baits and there has also been some good numbers of trag on the close reefs if the snapper are not your thing.

The wider grounds have produced some flathead and pan sized snapper but the weather may stop a lot of boats getting there. At this stage we have not seen our usual run of leatherjackets but they may show up at any tick of the clock so make sure you have plenty of spare hooks and sinkers just in case.

The beaches have been producing some chopper tailor, flathead and some good quality bream. Pilchards and cut baits such as mullet have been the best baits of late. Some of those quality bream have also been moving into the lower reaches of the river on the larger run up tides. Live yabbies, prawns and cut baits have all had success on different days. If you are after bigger flathead try up around Wardell Bridge with live herring, or stick with pilchards or prawns for the better eating sized fish between Pimlico Island and Broadwater.

The break walls and behind the CBD will be worth checking out with the full moon and night high tides being prime times to target the Jew this weekend. As usual the live baits have been the best bet, but if you are struggling to find some then make sure you have some mullet fillets or squid as back up.

Good luck with your fishing and tight lines

Brett
