Report 26/07/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Sat Jul 26, 2014 12:46 pm

This weekend may be a little wet on Saturday with rain predicted. A few nice days offshore during the week has seen snapper caught on the close reefs as well as the 32 and 48 fathom lines using baits and lures. A number of pearl perch, kingfish and amberjack have also been coming from the wider grounds and the odd bar cod has been taken on the shelf when the weather has been right. There is a reasonable amount of current at present but the wind is making the fishing more difficult at times.

The water quality in the river is excellent at present which has meant that the bream have been a little spooky. Pilchards, mullet and prawns have all tempted fish during the week in Emigrant creek and the main river. Two or three inch soft plastics have also worked quite well on the run in tide. There are still some good numbers of flathead up river from Pimlico island and the odd one in north or emigrant creek. Dark colored lures and pilchards have tempted most fish. A few keen people are still getting the odd crab as the water temperature is hovering around 20 degrees still.

There are some good numbers of blackfish from the ferry to the mouth of the river but the size is a little on the small side. The run in tide seems to be a little better if you are using green weed, but a few better fish are still taking live yabbies at night during the run out tide. The beaches and rocks have been little quiet with just the odd small tailor and a few bream being landed. South Ballina and Angels beach will be worth a look over the weekend, as will the outside of the breakwalls. Pilchards, mullet and metal spinners have all had some success, especially late afternoon

Good luck to all the ABT bream anglers at the Clarence river this weekend. Tight lines
