Report 02/08/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:19 pm

The wind has certainly arrived as it was predicted to for this weekend. It is currently blowing at least 25-30 knots and gusting even more around the northern rivers. The wind has also whipped the seas up to 2-3 meters at present and this is going to rule out any offshore or beach fishing and is going to make rock fishing a difficult if not dangerous option also. The break walls will be worth a look for a few bream and the odd Jew in these rough conditions but extreme caution should be used when fishing these locations. Large baits and lures will be the order of the day if you are chasing the Jew, and the inside of the south wall or the outside of the north wall will be the best of the spots to try.

Some good numbers of bream and luderick are still in the lower reaches of the river. As usual the luderick have been taking weed and the bream have been biting better on pilchards, mullet fillets and gut baits. The flathead are still in better numbers up river but have been a little quiet over the last few days and this cold change will not improve the situation. Try mullet, pilchards, herring or yakkas as bait, especially on the run out tide. Stick with dark colored lures and be fairly subtle with your presentation with the flathead not being terribly active. Some reasonable Jew have come from behind the CBD at night on live baits during the week. If the break walls are not your thing then this may be a better and safer option for you over the weekend.

The windy conditions may make North or Emigrant creeks a good alternative this weekend. Try chasing some flathead or bass and estuary perch. Please remember we are still on closed season for the bass and perch so they must be released immediately , but they can still be plenty of fun. 3 inch soft plastics have been working well for them, but the odd fish has also grabbed a hard body lure around snags and rock walls.

Tight lines
