Report 8/12/14

Post by subeditor » Mon Dec 08, 2014 11:08 am

Yet another wet and windy weekend in front of us. Break out the rain coats and umbrellas as they will surely be needed at some point this weekend. Hopefully most of it will be fairly scattered and should mean there will be enough opportunity to wet a line.

Offshore has been a little hit and miss but we have still had some snapper up to 6 kg coming from the 32 fathom line as well as a few flathead, trag and the odd mahi mahi. The current is still very strong on the 48 fathom line which is making bottom bashing very difficult but it may be worth starting to troll some lures for a marlin, mahi mahi or tuna.

The water temperature is quite cool and this has slowed the flathead and whiting up this week but there has still been a few bream and tailor. Mullet fillets and pilchards have been the pick of the baits. Angels Beach and Seven Mile hav been the pick of the spots but there are a few quality gutters on South Ballina also.

Some quality blue swimmer crabs have been caught in the river late this week and the run up tide early morning should be good for them this weekend. These early tides should also produce some whiting and flathead. Pimlico Island to the mouth of the river will be the main area to try but there is some better numbers of bream and a few school mulloway from Pimlico Island to Riley's Hill.

The cooler conditions has slowed the bass up, but there is still a few fish taking spinnerbaits and dark colored diving hard body lures. Coraki to Lismore will be the areas to concentrate on but the afternoon session will probably be the better option.

Tight lines! Brett.
