Report 13/2/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:10 am

Sunday should be the better day this weekend with a drop in the swell and the wind predicted. Some big tides this week due to the full moon has cleaned up the river a little.

Low tide early morning should mean a good run in tide for anyone wanting to chase whiting. Live worms or yabbies will be the best bait as usual. The big tides and some warm water have been good for the mud crabs as well, with plenty of them being caught. Both the creeks and the main river have been producing. The run in tide seems to have been a little better but this may be due to some of the debris making crabbing difficult during the out going tides.

Pimlico Island to Riley's Hill will be the area to concentrate on in the main river, and the highway bridges to the old rail bridge in Emigrant Creek. Some reasonable flathead have been caught in the lower reaches this week using live herring or pilchards for bait. Three inch soft plastics have also worked in some shallower water with the smaller fish, but with the cloud cover this weekend it will be worth trying some brighter colors to catch their attention. The discolored water doesn't seem to have slowed the bass up too much with some good fish in the mid forties being landed between Woodburn and Coraki. Dark colored lures are still working the best at present, and some blades or lipless crankbaits will also be worth a try.

The rocks and breakwalls have been producing some reasonable tailor and the odd jew even though conditions have been rough. Pilchards, squid and mullet have been the best of the baits and the better fish have been taken late afternoon and early evening.

The beaches and offshore have been too rough this week for the most part but Sunday may be a chance for the offshore boaties. Good conditions for mackerel on the close reefs if you can get safely across the bar, and slow troll some live baits around those close reefs.

Tight lines! Brett
