Report 30/4/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Apr 30, 2015 2:13 pm

A windy day is predicted for Sunday, so Saturday will be the day to make the most of and get out fishing.

The close reefs are still producing a few mackerel. Black Head is holding a few Spanish mackerel and Riordans has produced some spotties and Spanish. The odd snapper is also showing up in close so it may be worth floating a few pilchards or livies out as you are drifting. The current in the 32's is not too bad, and there has been some small snapper, flathead, parrot and goat fish caught with baits on the bottom. Water temperature is still holding fairly high and this has meant that we are still seeing some mahi mahi hanging around the FAD. Live baits, pilchards and skirted lures have all worked this week.

With a few westerly winds recently a few more tailor are starting to show up on the beaches. The odd larger fish has been caught this week, but the bulk of the fish have been around the kilo mark. Flathead, bream, dart and jew have also been caught on the beaches recently. Shelleys, Angels and South Ballina have been the better of the beaches to try.

In the river the flathead are still concentrated between Wardell bridge and the ferry, but the odd one has been up as far as Broadwater. Bream are still spread out along the rock walls, so try little or no weight with your lures or baits this weekend with the smaller tides. Mud crabs are still pretty good in both creeks and the main river. Try the run in tide in North creek for some whiting and luderick.

Tight lines. Lest we forget. Brett.
