Report 23/7/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Jul 23, 2015 10:36 am

Strong winds are predicted for Saturday but should start to drop back a little on Sunday. The odd shower is also predicted but is looking doubtful at this stage.
Any offshore fishing is looking unlikely at this stage until late next week when the swell drops back. There has been snapper in close and also out on the 32 fathom line. The leatherjackets seemed to have shown up in good numbers this week so be prepared for them next time you head out.
The beaches are going to be difficult to fish this weekend also due to the large swells pushing in. There has been some dart, whiting, tarwhine and bream on Seven Mile and Angels beach as well as a few bream and chopper tailor on South Ballina. Pilchards, Pippies and mullet have all been good bait options.
The cold weather seems to have fired the bream up in the river with some quality fish coming from the rockwalls on both baits and lures. Prawns, mullet and pilchards have all been good bait choices and 3 inch soft plastics and Cranka crabs have been working well for the lure brigade. Some good numbers of blackfish have been caught this week using weed. All the usual spots such as the bridges, Porpoise Wall and behind the Ramada have all produced fish.
The flathead have been fairly quiet with just a few small ones in the lower reaches and the odd bigger fish up around Pimlico and Wardell on white pilchards. Try fishing a little bit of deeper water or on the edge of the sandflats and stir up the sand with your sinker by slowly retrieving your bait to catch their attention.
The high tides at night should be prime if you are chasing jew this weekend. Live baits will be the best bet in the lower reaches of the river and some large lures should be the go for the rocks and walls in the washy areas.

Tight lines. Brett.
