Good numbers of flathead are still being caught from the mouth of the river to Wardell bridge. Prawns, blue pilchards and live herring have been the best baits to use and some darker colored soft plastics and hard body lures have also been effective.

There has been a few whiting caught earlier in the week, but the tides will not be great for them this weekend for the bait users. The windy conditions may mean that a few are caught using surface lures over some of the shallow sand flats. North creek and the lower reaches of the main river will be the best areas to try.

A few quality bream have been showing up in the lower reaches along the rock walls but the better numbers are still between Pimlico Island and Broadwater. Gut baits and mullet fillets, along with hard body lures have all worked this week.

The break walls will be worth a look for the experienced anglers for a few mulloway but the smaller versions should be up the river between the ferry and Wardell Bridge and as usual will probably be more interested in live, rather than dead baits.

Given the strong winds the creeks will be a great option for chasing mudcrabs. The run in tide has been the more productive tide this week and the night tides this weekend should be pretty good.

Some rain and a few big tides have put some color into the water in the upper reaches. This has meant that the bass have been a bit on the quiet side. You may have to move around a bit to find some cleaner water. Try using spinnerbaits and hard body lures to make it easier for the bass to find them given the poor visibility in the water. Try using darker colors for all lures and gold blades will be a wise option on the spinnerbaits.

Tight lines. Brett
