Report 21/9/18

Outside the snaps and the pearlies have been really good over the last couple of weeks, with good numbers getting caught. There have been some trag and tuskfish amongst them, and the odd goat as well. They're all coming out of anywhere between 15-40m.

A few big tuna are getting caught, but it's still early in the season so they're not in full swing yet.

There's not much current out wide at the moment, so the offshore boys have been dropping down for big bar cod and morwong. There are also some good kingfish getting caught around that 80-100m mark.

There have been some good fish in the wash around the islands, including good numbers of tailor along with snapper and kingfish.

Another drawcard at this time of year is the groper, blackfish and drummer caught from boats around islands like Pig and Solitary.

Off the beaches anglers have been catching good jew. Mixed in with them are tailor, bream and whiting.

Around the headlands we're still seeing good numbers of tailor, and kingies are starting to get around as well, coming in nice and close.

In the rivers at the moment small jewfish are firing really well. Flathead are also playing the game, and they're always a big attraction coming into spring. Each big girl is surrounded by a bunch of smaller males, so when you catch one you'll often catch more.

Bream also starting to be a big drawcard as well, and they're starting to eat surface lures.

Whiting will be the next species that will start to fire up. There's only the odd report at the moment, but it's still early in the season. Next month they should be in full swing.

Trevally are being caught in good numbers in the river. It's a real mixed bag, with everything from big-eyes to little GTs, tealeaf and silver trevally.
