Weekly Report 24/01/14

Outside the Spanish are finally coming through in good numbers, along with spotties. The marlin are thick too, with a lot of blacks up to 150kg, with an average size of 60-90kg. There’s plenty of bait on the wide grounds, particularly slimies and yakkas, and bonito as well.

The snapper grounds are pretty quiet, with only the odd snap here and there. If you’re lucky you may still get a quality fish though; this week someone brought an 11kg knobby to the store.

There are a few kingfish at the lighthouse, and on the wider grounds a few boys are getting kingfish, samsons and amberjack. There’s also the odd yellowfin getting around, which is good to see.

In the river we’re seeing some small runs of jewfish and the odd jack. There are plenty of good bream, and the whiting are coming on really thick as well. They’re talking surface lures with gusto.

Winter species like groper, blackfish and drummer have slowed right down, but nobody really minds as there are plenty of other options at the moment.
