The Spanish mackerel have nearly all gone, with just one or two a week being reported. There are tuna being caught, mainly consisting of mac tuna, striped and longtail. There haven’t been many yellowfin caught, not like last month.

Winter species are kicking in, with tailor and salmon coming up the coast. The snapper are starting to really come on thick, with lots of blokes catching them from their kayaks.

The squid fishing is great. Locals are catching heaps of eastern calamari off the rocks anywhere off the headlands, using 2.5-3.0 squid jigs. One bloke caught an 85cm specimen this week.

Blackfish are starting to turn up, with a lot of older fellas catching them everywhere – up the river, along the rock ledges and even at the mouth.

In the harbours there are a lot of trevally, which is typical for winter. A lot of blokes chasing bream have been getting smashed up by hungry trevs.

The jew still sticking around, but the action is up and down. We’ve seen half a dozen 60-pounders over the last few weeks, for those anglers who have put in the hours and effort.

A smattering of kingfish, samsonfish and AJs are being caught in the 30-40m mark fishing out towards the lighthouse. There are lot of smaller kings caught inside, of course, but the better ones come from out wider.

On the beaches anglers are getting a few tailor as well as some big bream.
