Report 04/07/14

We’ve had good weather over the past week so lots of anglers have been hitting the water.

We’re seeing a lot of groper, blackfish and drummer getting caught off the rocks around the mouth of the river. On the beaches a lot of bream are coming up now to do their spawning run. You can catch them anywhere from the river mouths all the way down to the lower estuaries.

The tailor and salmon are starting to slowly show up. We’ve had good runs of tailor but no great runs of salmon just yet.

A few snapper have been coming in nice and close. The kayakers have been taking advantage of that, catching them outside the breakers in 10-15m of water. Mal from our store recently caught a 14lb specimen from his kayak on a Gulp Jerkshad.

The kingfish are still around. You just use soft plastics like you would for snapper, only you work them a bit quicker. There are a few amberjack and samsonfish in the mix.

Squid are a big thing at the moment. One customer went out on the weekend and bagged out in one hour. You can catch the squid off the rock walls anywhere there’s a bit of grass.

The tuna starting to slow; we aren’t hearing many reports of good longtail tuna anymore. Around this time of year the bonito are a more likely proposition.

The FAD is pretty quiet, as is to be expected at this time of year.

Out at the Lighthouse there’s a good range of pearlies being caught in 20-30m of water. Mixed in with these are sweetlip (emperors) and various other reefies.
