Report 18/07/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Jul 18, 2014 4:41 pm

All the summer species now gone; the water temps have dropped and the macks have disappeared well and truly.

All winter species are really thick though. The snapper have come in nice and close, putting them within reach of the boys off the rocks and beaches. Using strip baits will put you in with the chance of the odd .

The real mainstays are salmon and tailor though, which have been smashing metals and also strip baits. Some of the tailor are great quality fish -- a bloke came in yesterday with a 6.42kg greenback that was as long as his wheelie bin. Most tailor, however, are around the 2-3kg mark which is still a good fish.

The salmon are mixed up with them all along the beaches and the headlands. They’re often up around the 50-60cm mark (approx. 2kg).

Blackfish are doing their big run. All the old fellas are getting them off the stones at the river mouth, all up and down the rocks and from the jetty. Not many have been caught downstream yet but that will happen in the next month or so.

The bream are really consistent. It’s the middle of spawning run so we’re seeing the bigger fish coming in from the sea to mingle with the river fish. Some of these large, old fish are nudging 40cm long.

Jewfish are still a mainstay after the mullet run. We’re seeing reasonable numbers in the 5-10kg size bracket, along with a few up around 20kg. Those catches should continue in the coming weeks.

Outside anglers are getting pearl perch and mixed reef species, including spangled emperor and the like. There’s still the odd kingfish, samsonfish or amberjack to be had as well. Get yourself some live squid and you’ll be in with a good shot.

On the topic of squid, there are stacks of them around at the moment. One angler dropping micro jigs for snapper picked up a 90cm southern calamari, and I’ve heard of others caught over a metre long. It’s the best season we’ve had for a long time.
