Report 08/08/14

Snapper are thick in the shallower reefs with a lot of mulloway mixed in. The snapper have been up to 10lb and the jew up to 20lb. There are some pearlies in the mix as well but they’re only small; around 2-2.5lb.

There’s not much to report from outside as it’s been a bit cold, with few people going out. One bloke did get out to the lighthouse mid week and got a bag of kingfish and amberjack, but he said they were all pretty small.

Coming in close towards the beaches, the salmon are in full swing and it’s one of the better seasons we’ve seen. It looks like the trappers down south didn’t hit their quota this season.

With the salmon we’re seeing some good tailor as well. Most of the salmon and tailor have ranged from 2lb up to around 6lb. Anything over 8lb is a good fish.

We’ve had mixed results with the bread-and-butter species from the beaches. Dart have started to show up along with bream, with the odd whiting thrown in. Tailor and salmon are a by-catch when fishing for the smaller stuff.

There’s good mulloway fishing from the beaches whenever the wind backs off, although that hasn’t happened much in recent weeks.

Squid are still getting caught but they’re pretty small at the moment. Earlier in the season we were getting lots of southern calamari around 60-80cm long, but now it’s mostly bottle squid around 10-20cm long. Not much good for food but they make good bait at least.

The rivers have been fishing pretty well, with some good bream getting caught in the upper reaches.

And it’s happy happy times because bass season is coming up! The whole bass scene is starting to warm up, with people buying lots of lures.
