Report 21/08/14

The fishing is pretty good at the moment with some good runs of bream all up and down the beaches. A lot of the blokes have been doing really well on these fish lately, getting specimens around 1-1.5kg from all the rocky headlands and around the beaches at the mouth of the river.

We’re also enjoying good runs of tailor and salmon, with tailor to around 2kg and salmon to around 3kg.

The snapper are sluggish; we just haven’t had the rain to bring the water temps down enough for them. Temps are currently around 20 degrees when they should be down around 18 degrees.

We’re still getting the odd mackerel which is unusual for this time of year. A few yellowfin tuna are getting caught as well; my colleague Rowan recently got an 11kg one from Scotts Head. There’s the odd bonito around as well.

Outside there are a few pearl perch getting caught. One bloke recently got a pearlie around 3.5kg which is a great size.

On the shallow reefs we’re seeing the odd spangled emperor and red-throat getting caught, but the snapper are definitely shy out wide.

Some anglers are getting the occasional kingfish and amberjack up around the lighthouse, in 20-30m of water pushing into around 50m. Most fish have been caught on jigs and livebaits.

There are a few school jew in the rivers up around 70-80cm. A few trevally and the odd salmon and tailor have been scooting down the river as well.
