Report 11/09/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Sep 11, 2014 4:24 pm

The influx of freshwater has been great for the fishing. The lower reaches are fishing really well for mulloway and bream. We’re even seeing the odd whiting sneaking up on the top of the tide. A few people have been throwing around small prawns, cunje baits and the old yabby for them.

When it comes to smaller pelagics like trevally and tailor, the action has been hot and cold. Some days there are good reports while other days are dismal. It’s something to be expected in a changeover month like September.

On the top of the tide we’re getting good blackfish runs. Still on the bottom of the tide there’s a fair bit of dirty water so good jew can be had around the rock mouths and in the lower reaches.

On the beaches there’s not much to report due to the wind. Word is there’s the odd bream, jew and tailor getting caught but that’s about it.

The rocks are producing drummer around 1-2kg. Local drummer fishers have been catching them off most of the local rocks around Coffs, in particular McCauleys and Muttonbird. The usual baits of cunje and green/purple/hermit crabs have been doing the damage. Green crabs seem to be the best but you have to put in a bit more effort to get wet and collect them. Mixed in with the drummer are groper up to 5kg.

Offshore there aren’t too many reports. Unfortunately the leatherjackets are starting to make their presence felt in dribs and drabs, with a few people getting bitten off. Desirable species like pearlies, snapper, teraglin, kingfish, samsons and amberjack are out there, you just have to get past the jackets first.

The pearl perch, snapper and trag are firing better since the rain last week; they’re apparently enjoying the cooler temps. Kingfish are pretty strong, and we’ve had good reports from guys fishing around the lighthouse.
