Outside there are plenty of mackerel with some really good size fish amongst them. Most are spotties but there are some reasonable catches of Spaniards starting to filter through as well. There also plenty of yellowfin on the shallower ground for guys chasing macks.

Some blacks and blues are starting to show up out wide for the game boys. We should start seeing the small blacks filtering down the coast shortly.

Inshore snapper at the moment are still firing well in amongst the spotties. The main challenge is getting your soft plastic past the toothy brigade so it can reach the reds.

Interestingly, there have been several reports over the last couple of weeks of large tiger sharks moving up and down the coast scaring kayakers. A customer the other day saw one longer than his Stealth, and it’s 14ft long!

Around the headlands there are still plenty of soapy jew being caught. We’re also starting to come to that time of year for the land-based game fishers to start spinning for mackerel and longtails from the stones. They’re just starting to turn up in bigger numbers.

Up the rivers there’s still plenty of whiting kicking around. It’s been a great last couple of months on the mud crabs as well, which is unusual for this time of year. Because we’ve had no decent rain, things are out of whack; the rivers are very clean and pristine. Heading up towards the brackish water, the amount of bream on the gravel beds on stickbaits is phenomenal at the moment.
