Report 19/5/17

We haven't had great results on mackerel out wide. A few bigger ones are getting caught, but overall they are patchy. The bait is still easy to find, but the mackerel aren't.

The bluewater gamefishers seem to have packed up for the season. The currents have dropped off a bit, and I haven't heard much about guys heading out wide for marlin and the like.

Snapper have started to show up, as we progress through that crossover period. Good snapper and pearlies have been coming off the inshore reefs. There are flatties out in about that 30-40m mark over the gravel beds.

The first early season kingfish are just starting to show up, and there are a few guys already chasing them.

Off the rocks, the tailor have been reasonably good, and there are still a few little tuna etc around -- all the usual suspects. They're usually caught on metals.

There are some good size bream around the rocks and the rock walls.

On the beaches, jewfish catches have become more common. A bit of green water and swell woke them up. Try any of the bigger gutters using worms or salted pilchards. There are bream down on the beaches as well.

Up the river the flathead have started to wake up again, and there are bigger bream around the mouth getting ready for the spawn. There are a few late season jacks but they're starting to taper off.

In the clearer water anglers are still getting a few trevally and a couple of whiting, but not as many in this cooler weather. They're shying away from surface lures now.

For the guys in the marina there have been blackfish everywhere, and a few trevally caught in there lately as well.
