Report 23/2/18

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Feb 23, 2018 11:21 am

Not much to report last week due to the big seas that swept through our part of the world. The end of the week saw boats able to get out again for a mixed bag. There were a few Spotted Mackerel off Grassy but the good news the water is nice and warm with good color. Small Blacks are still with us in front of the Jail while a few boats had some success around the FAD for Dolphin Fish and a few Blacks in a fishable current. Kings have been reported around Green Island and Fish Rock with a few Wahoo out of the same location. We have had a crew of kayakers fishing off Jail during the big swells for Cobia up to 27 kilo, but talking to one fellow he had a Shark on beside his small craft and it was taken by a bigger Shark, not for me I’m afraid.

Our river is full of under size Bream so you need to fish the darker hours for that cracker Bream. The boaties managed to bag some nice Flathead but they are tough to find for the land based fish’os. There are Whiting taking Worms and Nippers around the sand flats of Jerseyville as well as Kinchella and Smithtown. Moses Perch or Fingermark are in numbers off the walls out to the mouth of the river.

The Beaches were unfishable during the swell but some nice gutters are forming on Smoky Beach and producing good Whiting and Bream along the beach. Now is a good time to try for a Flathead or two on Back Beach with a calming sea. Rock Hoppers are pulling in some nice Kings with still a few good Tailor hanging around.
