Report 10/5/19

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri May 10, 2019 9:43 am

Good conditions last week and some light southerly winds blowing saw good numbers of boats heading north for some late Mackerel action. The water temps are still around 24 degrees and with that we saw some nice fish caught. Spotties are still there but the Spanish are a little harder to find. One or two Wahoo are in front of the Jail with a 31 kilo brut caught through the week. Snapper up north to 6 kilo were caught with Pearl Perch in fair numbers. Long Tail Tuna are still about along the coast with a lot of Bonito if that is your thing. Trolling along the Jail in close has been producing some nice Tailor in a calm sea. Slimies were easier to find through the week.

In the river we are getting another run of Kings along the break wall. It is hard to get their attention but one fisho landed a legal unit on a 95 sugar pen fishing for bream. There are the odd Good Bream coming in the system but the warm clear water has slowed the run. Blackfish are patchy with the artificial weed working on them early in the season. Up river reports of smaller Jewfish in the deeper holes where there is some color in the water. Flathead are still in fair numbers but that big unit is harder to find. Surprisingly the odd Whiting are in the river but you will need to pump Nippers or get some fresh worms to entice these tasty critters.

Out of the surf on Smoky and Gap beach Bream and Dart are being caught with reports of some very nice Green Back Tailor in front of Black Rock. There is a lot of Mullet netting happening down the Hat Head end of the beach so you need to pick your times.
