13/10/05 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Thu Oct 13, 2005 5:24 pm

Windy conditions again last week meant a choppy, uncomfortable ocean out there. Mixed reports but on the whole, a quiet week.
Grassy Head has been giving up some snapper with no monsters amongst them, just good panners. There have been some very nice venus tuskfish around the same location. Spanner crabs are about but don’t forget, the females are banned from the October 21. There have been heaps of striped marlin sighted out wider but at this stage they are not taking anything. We also have had reports of a few mahi mahi around.
The beaches are fishing OK with Smoky Beach having bream, dart, salmon and a few whiting. Gap Beach has bream and flathead while Back Beach has been quiet apart from the odd salmon.
A few jewfish have been caught off the breakwall on mullet, mainly on the run-out tide. Live bait is hard to get with the pike on holidays and the herring a non-event. Bream and flathead are a little tough to get out of the river at the moment. The water is very clear and a run out-tide is the better option. Best reports of bream are off the breakwall on light gear. Flathead have been up around Stuarts Point and Clybucca with the odd whiting.
With the sightings of the big pelagics so early it might be time to service your reels or take advantage of our line-spooling machine and replace your line ready for that fish of a lifetime.
