Weekly Report 8/12/06

It’s just about that time when we share our piece of paradise with hundreds of holidaymakers, hopefully the weather and the fish turn it on.
The river has been reasonable with good catches of flathead and bream with a few keeper whiting coming in. Small cobia are still about off the breakwall. Jewfish are on the bite at night, going for live bait or 5” or 6” plastics. Bob, one of our locals, had just the head left of his estimated 15kg jew taken by a mystery shark.
Smoky Beach has been hit and miss, whiting are there in the white water taking live worms. There are plenty of dart around and the odd bream to keep you interested. Weed is still a problem. The rockhoppers are struggling, with the best spots down at Hat Head for small kings and an odd jewfish.
Most boats are heading out to the FAD because the mahi mahi are going off. These fish are 6kg-plus and there are plenty of them. Very strong currents are making fishing the bottom wide difficult. Fish Rock is alive with kingfish. Unfortunately you will battle to get one over 60cm. Fishing in close for snapper has been a non-event because of a slimy weed in front of Grassy and Scotts. Water temperatures are down at the moment which is not helping.
