Weekly Report 12/1/07

Good news and bad news: Fishing outside is fantastic, bad news is you need to get out towards the 20km mark for big yellowfin with 30kg to 40kg fish common. Big wahoo are out there as well with blue marlin 70kg-plus being reported. Bigger kings are around Fish Rock at the moment amongst the rats. Spotted mackerel are off Grassy, but again this week they are very finicky. Bottom fish have quietened down out of the same location. Small marlin are in front of the jail taking live slimies. 11-year-old visitor Nick Campbell landed a ripper 7kg snapper fishing the bottom in the same area, while the summer cobia haven’t found their way to our area yet.
River fishing has been fair with some above-average flathead coming in. There are plenty of bream about being caught on light gear around the walls and oyster racks. If you’re after whiting the best spots are around the tavern or a trip up to Smithtown should be worthwhile.
On the Beaches around town Smoky has some good whiting coming in while Gap Beach has whiting, bream and the odd flathead on the north end of the beach. Back Beach has whiting at the entrance to the back creek, all on live worms.
