Weekly Report 20/04/07

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Apr 20, 2007 11:54 am

Conditions last week outside were perfect even for the most finicky stomach. Grassy Head reefs are producing a few spotties and the odd Spanish while some areas on the bottom are producing good snapper but berley for better results. Wahoo are about in good numbers, taking live bait, skirted and hard minnow lures, use wire or it gets expensive. Fish Rock is producing good kingfish on live bait or squid and a few thumper mack tuna. One report out very wide of a 200kg approx blue marlin caught by Mick Doosey and his crew, successfully released after 1.5 hours and 6km of chasing him around the ocean. Flathead are in big numbers off the sand.
The river is fishing well for flathead with the hot spots being Spencers Creek and up towards Stuarts Point. There are still a few whiting around taking live worms but there is really no size about these. Bream are around the boatshed and ramps in huge numbers, try late afternoon or night for that big one. Good reports of bream up at Smithtown along with some bass as well this week.
Smoky Beach has tailor coming in about half-way along in good numbers, taking pilchards, garfish and metal spinners. Good bream are in the gutters with probably the last of the whiting.
As most of you have heard the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and others are trying to close Fish Rock and 1.5km around it to recreational and commercial fishing with the great grey nurse shark con that is set to destroy the tourism in this town and others like ours.
