18/11/05 Weekly Report

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Nov 18, 2005 9:36 am

The north-easterly wind finally stopped blowing this week, only to be replaced by a southerly, but the upside to this is that it flattened the bar and sea when it stopped and the fishos took advantage of this.
The river has been fishing well for school jew with some bigger ones hitting the decks. Bigger soft plastics have been working a treat with larger poddy mullet for the bigger fish, the locations are the usual places, north and south walls, Jersey Bridge and The Cut. Flathead are also around the same areas but I have had some good reports at the mouth of Kinchela Creek. Whiting are in the river with some nice among them. Most of these fish are up river a bit, Bream are there but the bigger fish are lurking around the racks.
The sandshoe fishos are bagging some nice bream and whiting off the beaches with Smoky and Gap being the pick of them. Live worms, prawns and pipis are the better baits. The rockhoppers are getting a feed as well with bream, drummer and the odd tailor.
Fishing outside had been hit or miss but picked up this week, Dennis Morton, fishing in close off Grassy, bagged out on snapper with the biggest going 4.5kg. The FAD has been producing some nice mahi mahi on live baits and lures but don't run over the wash of the downside current because this spooks the fish and they'll go off the bite. There have also been some good kingies at Fish Rock with fish up to 24kg. Live baits are good but the pick of the baits is garfish trolled at a depth of 3m. Snapper have also been around the Rock but drift in close with pillies and a small ball sinker, but watch out for the Grey Nurse Sharks – the divers are tired of chasing and harassing the sharks so they can ‘remove 15 hooks a week from them’! (see Daily Telegraph 5/11/05).
