Weekly Report 4/1/08

No surprises here, dozens of frustrated blue-water fishers waiting for the sea to settle, but just like most of the East Coast it’s ugly outside with seas around 4m and whether you’re looking at the river or the creek, it’s the bar crossing from hell. Before the low there was a hint of excitement out wide with yellowfin to 30kg, two mahi mahi to 17kg and a striped marlin around 130kg all caught off the shelf and further. Let’s hope it goes off when the sea calms down.
Fishing the beaches has been tough with the surge too strong for most fishos. More sheltered beaches like Main Beach have been fishing well for whiting and the odd bream while Back Beach at the entrance to the creek has had some whiting and bream. Smoky Beach has been blown out with the keen fishos pulling out whiting from the white water.
There has been a lot of traffic in the river due to the outside conditions. Flathead have been on the bite keeping most guys satisfied. Bream have been along the breakwalls biting well on chicken gut, worms and mullet. The oyster racks around Clybucca are going off with bream hitting fizzers, poppers and other 50mm surface lures. Plenty of whiting out of the shallows feeding on worms and nippers.
