Weekly Report 18/1/08

We just can’t get a break in the weather. Holidaymakers are doing it tough, especially those trying to get outside. There is still some dirty water coming out of the river, making the inshore reefs tough to pull fish out of. There are mixed results down south to Fish Rock with the odd kingfish and yellowfin with a few scatted snapper. One boat had success with cobia, hooking six over a couple of days. Even though we have 25° to 27° water and good bait balls, the billfish normally here at this time of year are yet to be seen. Mahi mahi are about with some nice ones around the FAD and the traps wide of Grassy. Hat Head fishos have caught a few wahoo and yellowfin with plenty of bonito around for fresh bait.
Whiting are still the mainstay off the beaches with good numbers on Smoky and Gap Beach. Closer to home, Back Beach is fishing well for whiting along with Trial Bay at the end of the breakwall. Tailor have reappeared off the rocks after the big seas.
Provided we have no more rain the river should be starting to clear. Good flathead have been on the bite with some monsters caught along the breakwall on live mullet and the bigger plastic baits. Larger bream have been tough to get while there’s been colour in the water so the incoming tide is better to fish.
Congratulations to all the winners of the sixth annual Seabreeze Hotel Huge Fishing Competition, with $500 each going to Norm Rudder’s 4.854kg snapper and Col Bradbrook’s 1.090kg bream.
