Weekly Report 1/2/08

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 01, 2008 11:41 am

Small black marlin are finally making an appearance in the very warm water in front of the jail. They’re still not in big numbers but promising, anyway. Cobia are about, and a lot of them at the moment, feeding mainly on slimy mackerel. We do have a shark problem here with more than a few cobia becoming shark bait before you can boat the fish. Reports from the FAD indicate the mahi mahi are smaller this week and not as many around as previous weeks. Fish Rock has a good number of kingfish around it with a large number of keepers coming out while the yellowfin are taking lures trolled around this area. Once again this week there were reports of a small number of spotties and the odd spanish coming in off Grassy and Scotts Head out of the green water in close. Late last week slimies were tough to get, thanks again to the longline tuna boat mooring at the buoys.
Our river system is still dirty on the low tides but it’s not affecting the flathead with some crackers caught again this week. Bream are biting better on the incoming clean water while whiting are in good numbers on the flats. If you are fishing the walls expect some estuary cod amongst the bream, but they have to go back to the water or it’s an expensive fillet if you get caught keeping them – they’re protected.
Those fishing Smoky Beach battled for good whiting and bream last week with some better catches further south along the beach.
