Weekly Report 22/2/08

Post by Tony Zann » Fri Feb 22, 2008 12:14 pm

Fishos battled the conditions again last week for mixed results outside. The water is around 24° with heaps of bait but the billfish are few and far between. Cobia are about in small numbers and taking live bait. Yellowfin are plentiful, taking bibless and small skirted lures with most being caught trolling between Fish Rock and the Jail. Kingfish are all over Fish Rock but most are under or just on legal. Snapper have been on the bite off the closer reefs with the odd 5kg fish among them. A few of the bigger boats got out to the FAD for some quality mahi mahi with 11kg the biggest reported.
Good Bream are along the breakwall on the run-in tide with a few over 40cm. It is a long process but the river seams to be slowly clearing with the bigger tides helping last week. Flathead have been a little harder to find with only a few reported in the river while Back Creek is producing some nice panners. Whiting numbers are improving with some nice fish around Clybucca and Jerseyville. Bull sharks are in good numbers up river in the dirty water.
Smoky beach is fishing well for tailor with pilchards or garfish in the big swell with whiting and dart in good numbers as well. Better results appear to be further along the beach towards Hat Head. Little Bay and Back Beach have been fishing well for whiting and the odd bream. Rockhoppers are getting some nice tailor amongst the many undersize bream and tarwhine.
